Pediatric Nurse as a Career?
2 CommentsChildren are the future, so it should stand to say that we would do whatever we can to make sure they are around for that future. This helps some people in choosing what career they go into. One career that is very important for children’s well being is the career of pediatric nursing.
These specialized nurses are important because they are with children that are aged newborn to adolescences. Pediatric nursing see children while they are growing and developing. Some of them might even get lucky and see the same child through this whole age group, newborn to adolescence. The services that the pediatric nurses provide are that they respond to acute and chronic illnesses, concerns for healthy living and disease prevention and management of physical and mental disabilities.
The main service pediatric nurses provide is comprehensive care to children adolescents and their families in many different settings. Pediatric nurses do make diagnoses on children before seeing their pediatrician. Some of the diagnoses that the nurses can make are growth and development problems, upper or lower respiratory infections and ear, nose and throat infections. It is important that the nurses are able to spot these diagnoses, this way they can tell the doctor exactly what they are looking for. This helps not only the doctor from having to waste time doing what the nurse just did but it also helps the children who more and likely don’t want to be at the doctor’s office. This is just one of the benefits of having a well rounded pediatric nurse.
There are many practical roles for pediatric nurses. One of the major ones is a staff nurses. These are the nurses that see the majority of pediatric patients. These are the nurses that you will more and likely see when you are taking your children to the doctor’s office. Some of the other practical roles for pediatric nurses are clinical nurse specialist, a nurse manager, a supervisor, a case manager or a nurse practitioner. Each of these is a great career and some of them have to be worked towards.
There are many characteristics of a pediatric nurse. Some of these characteristics are teamwork, autonomy and independent functioning, direct patient care and relationships, teaching and making a difference. These are just a handful of the characteristics that make for a good pediatric nurse.
There are also desirable skills that potential employers look for in their potential nurses. Some of the skills that they look for are people skills, stress management, flexibility and empathy. One of the major skills that a pediatric nurse should possess is that of loving children. If you are going to be seeing multiple children on a daily basis then you should love being around children. A potential employer wants an employee that is going to love the job that they are going to be doing.
There are drawbacks to working as a pediatrics nurse. Some of the drawbacks include ethical conflicts, high level of stress, bureaucracy of the hospital, paperwork, policies, pressure to perform to the standards of your boss. One of the major drawbacks to being a pediatric nurse is that of patient grief. This can include seeing mothers who don’t like to see their babies crying because they have received a shot. It could also include the grief after a family hears that their child has a physical or mental disability. Another of the major drawbacks is the lack of patient cooperation. Since pediatric nurses work with children most of the time you are not going to get cooperation from your patients. This is most likely to happen in the smaller children, especially babies because they don’t know much better. This is just a brief overview of what it takes to become a pediatric nurse.
There are many benefits that pay off in the long run. This is a career that can be very fulfilling and make you happy, if you love working with children. Pediatric nurses get to work with newborns to adolescence aged children. Even with the drawbacks of the profession many people have made this into a fulfilling and successful career. A pediatric nurse can help to make sure we have healthy children for the future.
