What is Pediatric Cardiology?
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the field of pediatric cardiology has continued to expand beyond anyone’s past projections. Futuristic technologies allow doctors and specialists to do things which no one could have imagined in earlier times, an informational advent which has lead to the invention of even more fantastical procedures. For those who find themselves unable to locate a real heart for transplant, they can receive an artificial one, some even being external and easily accessible to medical crews. A small balloon can be inserting into the heart’s main arteries to remove clogs and clots, and quick-thinking masters of the knife can practice vital open-heart surgeries in mere minutes. These and other astonishing advancements have directly affected another fledgling field- that of pediatric cardiology. In the past, heart problems in children were seldom understood, even by the most distinguished professionals. Particularly in the early 20th century, unexplained deaths in children were rarely labeled as heart-related, even if, in reality, they were exactly that. Although this reality might seem alien to today’s medically adept society, the know-how to diagnose minute heart and cardiac disorders has not always been there. In fact, the deep insight which doctors and specialists now take for granted has only recently been perfected for use within the standard population. Nowadays, heart problems in children are more common than ever before. Not only because of changing trends in eating and lifestyle habits, but due to scientists’ new ability to recognize them prematurely.

Pediatric Child Care
Revolutionary ultrasounds allow doctors to diagnose rare heart disorders before children even leave the womb. This process is known as fetal echocardiology, and the full impact of it’s discovery has likely yet to be fully realized. By utilizing information collected by fetal echocardiologists, modern surgeons are capable of correcting potentially fatal heart defects present in children still in the womb. In correcting disorders such as heart holes, defects in major arteries or murmurs before children are born, it allows the fetus’ heart to fully heal with the help of their mother’s vitality.
While fetal paediatric cardiology has methods to address defects prior to birth, fetal echocardiology is still in it’s early years. Much of the time, diagnosis times are prolonged, and babies are left to live with their conditions until after birth. This can make arise a wealth of problems, some being difficult for doctors to address. Whereas the child is suspended in a perfect, safe environment while contained within their mother, the outside world is far from safe. Babies’ hearts are particularly susceptible to shock immediately after being born, and this can cause any pre-existing issues to be considerably magnified. Most of the time, this rather alarming difference of location does not prove enough to scare a child dead, but it can at times do just that.
Doctors and surgeons, faced with the need to keep newborn babies alive whilst giving them open heart surgery, have had to innovate in unimaginable ways. Most anesthesia cannot be administered to very small children, leaving an important aspect of surgery unusable. Studies suggest that the use of anesthesia do not affect children during birth, but afterward their heavy use can cause a host of unpleasant side-effects. From behavioral problems to drug toxicity, the risk of administering sedatives can last years, perhaps even that child’s entire life. Doctors, however, have discovered how to compensate. By using exact combination of key sedatives, anesthesiologists can keep babies unconscious whilst performing delicate procedures without the risk of long-term damage
